How to Deal With Writers’ Block

Writers’ block.

Yay.

Aren’t you just a real pal to all writers out there?

If you’re here, fellow writer, you know how it feels. Nothing will come out, no matter how hard you try. You don’t know what to make happen next. Your characters are left frozen mid-punch, or in mid-air, or in the middle of a love confession. You’re typing out “blah blah blah hi i like cheese” out of pure desperation.

Well, fear not, because I’ve read tons of different tips on permanently defeating writers’ block, and will be sharing the few that have worked for me every time.

Let me know in the comments which one of these things works for you!

1) IMAGINE.

Sit back and use your imagination. What are a few things that absolutely CANNOT or SHOULD NOT happen next? What would you, as a reader, expect to happen next?

2) WRITE ON PAPER.

I don’t know how or why, but taking a break from the laptop to continue writing on a sheet paper works wonders on my focus and productivity. I find myself writing entire chapters this way. It may not work for everyone, but you should give it a try.

3) READ.

One of the best ways to improve your writing is to READ. Take a break from your own book and read someone else’s. Or maybe you can do what I sometimes do: go back to the beginning of your story and read it just for fun. This can get you back into the mood and pace of everything.

4) DOODLE.

Try sketching out the scene you got stuck on, or drawing your main characters. It doesn’t matter if you think you’re good at drawing or not. Doing this can help to re-boot your creativity and get a better vision of your story in general.

5) JUST WRITE.

Sometime you’ve gotta force yourself to keep writing, even when you know it’s garbage. This may seem impossible, but it can work. Make the dialogue cliche, the descriptions bland if you have to. You can fix it all later.
